Why CBA exists
The CBA is used as the tool / mechanism to determine whether a person who is undertaking complex engineering work should be registered as a competent and able Professional Engineer.
It is generally accepted that a Professional Engineer should possess the knowledge and other work attributes and ethics to carry out complex engineering work.
One register today, two more planned
IEPNG currently has only one Professional Register, set up under the Professional Engineers Registration Act. It holds all Professional Engineers registered with PERB, who are also required to be Institution members in the Member or Fellow class.
Professional Engineers Register
Holds all Professional Engineers registered with PERB — Members and Fellows of the Institution.
Engineering Technologist Register
Proposed new register. Requires the Act to be amended before it can be established.

Expatriate Professional Engineers
Knowledge Assessment
Expatriates and PNG Nationals who hold a Washington Accord engineering qualification, or an equivalent, may have their knowledge assessment exempted or minimised.
Local Knowledge of PNG
The expatriate applicant must meet the requirements of Element 2 — Local Knowledge of PNG, to the satisfaction of the Assessor.
Expatriate engineering professionals are currently required to be registered with PERB and financial members of IEPNG for the duration of their work permit period. It is proposed that the initial competency assessment also cover that work permit period. The expatriate engineer will be required to undertake the Competency Assessment again should they re-apply to renew their work permit for another term in PNG, or when working abroad on PNG-based projects worth K200,000 or more.
Every three years, for National Professional Engineers
The National Professional Engineer is required to undertake a CBA every three (3) years to prove they are still competent in the practice area they are performing in — for example, Civil Engineer, Works Manager, FAS, or Design — in order to remain registered as a Professional Engineer.
